Ways to Stop Weight Gain During Menopause - Lose the Pounds NowPosted on 01.29.2010 : Authored by Doug Hart
The reasons for weight gain in menopause are several: as the hormones estrogen and progesterone are decreasing, the body is trying to protect what little of these hormones are available by adding fat, since they are fat-soluble. Also this is probably the bodies attempt to protect the bones at this stage of life, since a loss of calcium is a typical side effect of these hormone changes as well. Of course as we get older, men and women both tend to slow down in activity, so a natural weight gain is coincidental for women in menopause also. Such bad timing! Let's find some ways to reverse this trend quickly. Eating more natural foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables, and less processed foods is of course a great idea. Cutting down on fats in the diet will be big way to ease that spare tire as well, but there are more ways than just these. Many women get quickly caught up in the "fad" diets that seem to sweep the nation every year - don't do it! They rarely work, and if they do work aren't healthy and are mostly very short lived. Once you stop the diet, you will return to your previous weight and probably put on more pounds! Eat more whole grain breads, cereals, and pasta since they are much healthier than the processed, refined versions. Whole grains have more nutrients such as vitamins & minerals, and also contain much more fiber. In fact it is a good idea to read labels of things like bread before buying them since the fiber content is very important in keeping a healthy body. How much clean water you drink can also greatly affect your weight, since it can help to cleanse your body and replaces the high calorie sodas and other sugar-laden drinks many women consume without realizing how many empty calories are in them. Just keeping track of what you eat and drink on a daily basis may be the best thing at first, since you will then be able to see exactly what you are eating and make an effort to change to an alternative choice.
