What Can I Eat?

Many of us have real questions around what we can eat. Perhaps it is a health restriction due to a condition or procedure or maybe it just a simple diet program that calls for specific items to be on or off of the menu.

The ideal body image is coming to you. Weight loss can be achieved by eating smarter.

Regardless of whether or not you have a mandate, we can all be smarter about what, when and how we eat. Most of us know that eating just prior to bedtime is not good. And most of us know that breakfast is an important meal.

Why is breakfast so important? Because if you do not feed yourself at regular intervals, your body and mind will begin to wonder whether food is coming and when; and that wondering will cause your body to store food to help ensure survival. It's a Cave Man type instinct so eat something for breakfast and allow your body to bun the fuel that it has.

Please understand that your body and mind act as one and want to be fed regularly. Sometimes we can manipulate that process to our advantage. Take water for example, or green tea, with virtually no calories those items can make you seem to be full and remove the distraction from feeling hungry.

As for the various types of food and what you can eat, there are some general guidelines that make sense.

Water and low calorie drinks such as lemon water or green tea can be a nice additive to any meal and can help your mind and body achieve a full status.

Fruits and Vegetables not only make natural sense but they are low calorie, high in vitamins and minerals and typically very high in water content so you get back to where you are not consuming a lot of calories to get the benefit. Fruits and vegetables are probably (pound for pound) the best insurance to a long life that money can buy. Vegetables also help burn up other foods that you eat and make digesting meats easier.

Juices and Dairy Products. Many people will tout the calcium, B12 or other benefits of dairy products but personally I see juice as a more natural alternative. Granted the calcium in milk is critical to a long and healthy life and to ensure bone strength and to fight off osteoporosis.

Chicken, Fish and Meats are important protein sources and most people feel that chicken is the wisest choice since it digests faster and does not come with all of the risk that fish or beef bring.

From an environmental standpoint, beef is starting to be known as a real problem due to the animal gases and their effect on the stratosphere. Of course, if you look hard enough you can find strong reasons for not eating just about any commonly used food - even chicken.

Chocolates and deserts are typically regarding as sin in the diet world but frankly I believe in the power of chocolate - especially dark chocolate. A little nibble on some chocolate actually tells my brain (quickly) that I am starting to get full. Try that in the middle of a meal and then wait a couple of minutes. You may find that you no longer want to finish the meal.
